Design and Technology in Today’s World: A First Lookintroduces primary students from Year 3 to Year 6 to the building blocks of Design and Technology (D&T). These building blocks are presented as units of study supported by activity sheets.
The activity sheets contain a range of activities: individual research, small-group task(s) and/or classroom discussion. The classroom discussion activities are an opportunity to broaden the scope of the topic. They also provide a platform to address students’ related interests as well as introducing any ‘news-of-the-day’ topics regarding design and technology.
Teachers may adjust the topics and the scope of activities to suit different year levels and class needs. Design and Technology in Today’s World: A First Look is written to address the Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6 bands of the Australian Curriculum: Design and Technologies, as well as individual states’ and territories’ Design and Technologies primary curricula.
The units of study explore the strand, ‘Design and Technologies: Knowledge and Understanding’, while the activity sheets explore the strand, ‘Design and Technologies: Processes and Production Skills’.
